Popular rap artist Talib Kweli is an anomaly amidst today’s rap scene. He is praised for his socially conscious and thought provoking lyrics, and he actively speaks out on socio-political issues. He describes his subject matter as “black-self love, black self esteem, black self-worth.” That the message “translates to other communities because… you’ve been through some sort of struggle and you can apply it to your own life.”
Kweli began his solo career with Quality, released in 2002, which received widespread critical acclaim. He followed with his second album, The Beautiful Struggle in 2004 and Now: The Official Sucka Free Mix CD in 2005. His latest album, Eardrum (2007), released by his own record label, Blacksmith Music, debuted number two on the Billboard 200. Eardrum features guest musical performances by a variety of well-known artists such as Norah Jones, Kanye West, and Justin Timberlake.The high caliber of Kweli’s lyrical expression and musical composition contributes to the cry of music artists and social luminaries alike, who are activists for the modern abolitionist movement.
