San Diego-based Switchfoot burst onto the national scene with the release of their fourth full-length album, The Beautiful Letdown, released by Columbia Records in 2003. The double platinum album sold 2 million copies and earned them two Top 10 singles. Nothing is Sound (2005) debuted number three on Billboard Top 200 and netted four of five Dove Awards, including Artist of the Year 2005. The band, comprised of brothers Jon and Tim Foreman, as well as Jerome Fontavillas, Drew Shirley, and Chad Butler, released Oh! Gravity in December 2006, which ranked number eighteen on the Billboard chart and peaked at number one on iTunes Top Albums chart.

Their politically driven and socially critical lyrics reach countless audiences, allowing them to share their passion for justice. "As a rock band, we're not overly idealistic about single-handedly changing the world, but we do know that people are listening to what we have to say ... so we want to use what platform we have been given to make a difference." Their annual Bro-Am charity surf contest and concert raises awareness and funds for various causes while utilizing enviro-friendly sound and staging The members of the band also created lowercase people, a non profit that brings focus to humanitarian needs around the world and raises funds through a magazine, apparel line and justice foundation. Their addition to this abolitionist movement contributes a strong and sincere voice for those trapped in slavery.
